Glasgow’s skyline has changed again after two high-rise tower blocks in the Gorbals were demolished in a controlled explosion.
Plans to bring down the tower blocks at 305 and 341 Caledonia Road were presented to Glasgow City Council in 2023, citing a fire safety risk.
An assessment in 2019 found the risk could “only be permanently reduced” by removing cladding and timber balconies installed in the 1990s.
After consultation with residents, it was decided public investment would be “better directed at rehousing the existing tenants, demolishing the buildings and funding a new-build programme of replacement housing”.
New Gorbals Housing Association (NGHA) is set to replace the high-rise flats with more than 100 new social rent homes.
On Sunday, crowds gathered to watch the buildings come down.
