Glasgow City CouncilA competition has been launched to redesign sites in Glasgow that were destroyed by two major fires.
Glasgow City Council will ask architects to submit proposals of designs for new building on the sites at Albert Cross in the city’s Pollokshields area.
The B-listed tenement blocks at Albert Cross each housed several flats and businesses.
They were destroyed in separate fires – the first in November 2019 and a second in April 2020.
Both have since been demolished.
Councillor Ruari Kelly, Convener for Housing, Development and Build Heritage said: “Through this competition, we will transform the sites at Albert Cross on which these distinctive buildings stood before being lost through fire.
“We will be looking for exceptional and exciting designs that will restore vibrancy to a location that has been a centre of Pollokshields’ social and business life for generations.”
Design proposals will need to complement the town centre and be sympathetic to the built heritage around it.
Councillor Kelly added: “Carrying out such a contest will not only restore Albert Cross and the homes and businesses lost but will also potentially provide a template for the redevelopment of gap sites in Glasgow, sites which are often found in areas with heritage buildings immediately adjacent or close by.”
The contest will be carried out in collaboration with the Glasgow Institute of Architects.
Short-listed teams will secure funding to help develop their proposals further before a winner is selected.
Alongside the contest, Glasgow City Council will look to acquire sites on a voluntary or compulsory purchase basis.
