Commonwealth gold medal bowler Mary Stevenson dies two months after Games

Bowler Mary Stevenson has died, two months after she won gold for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

She took the top prize in the para-bowls B2-B3 event earlier this year alongside her teammates James Aitken, Robert Barr and Sarah-Jane Ewing.

Shanks Bowling Club paid tribute to her, writing: “It’s with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Mary Stevenson in the early hours of this morning.

“Mary has been a long standing member of Shanks and represented the club at local, national and international levels.

“Our thoughts are with Marys family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for Bowls Scotland said: “Everyone at Bowls Scotland is deeply saddened by the passing of Scotland international Mary Stevenson.

“Just a couple of months ago, we watched Mary (Shanks BC) win Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow as part of Scotland’s Para Mixed Pairs B2/B3 team. Only last weekend, she was back competing for Scotland and in great form. It is difficult to believe she is no longer with us.

“We will remember the joy of that gold medal moment and the part Mary played in it, earning herself the moniker Mary Queen of Shots. We will also remember the character and joy she brought on and off the green. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, club and teammates at this heart-breaking time.”

Team Scotland said: “Commonwealth Games Scotland is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Team Scotland bowler Mary Stevenson.

“A Glasgow 2026 gold medallist, Mary was an inspiration to so many and will be greatly missed.”
