Glasgow announces bid as back-up host for Commonwealth Games in 2026

Plans are being drawn up for Glasgow to host the sporting tournament for a second time if talks with other countries fall through.

The Commonwealth Games could soon return to Scotland after Glasgow announced a bid to host the games in 2026.

The sporting tournament was due to be held in Victoria but the Australian state pulled out last year over rising costs.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is in advanced talks with other nations to host the games.

But a back-up plan has been drawn up for the competition to return to Glasgow if talks with other countries fail.

If successful, it would be the second time the Commonwealth Games is held in Glasgow and the fourth in Scotland.

Edinburgh hosted the tournament in 1970 and 1986 while the games were held in Glasgow in 2014.

Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) said its 2026 proposal for the games would require no significant public investment and would mostly use existing facilities.

It estimated that costs could be as high as £150m with £100m being funded directly by the CGF.

The rest of the cash would be produced commercially including through ticketing, sponsorships and broadcasting.

The games would be significantly slimmed down under the plans with Scotland’s biggest city offering around ten to 13 sports instead of the 20 Birmingham had in 2022.

The 2026 games in Glasgow would be a slimmed down version of the 2014 events.

Ian Reid CBE, chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland, said: “We know how important the Commonwealth Games is for athletes, sports and supporters, and we remain concerned about the impact the ongoing uncertainty around 2026 is having on everyone concerned.

“It is vital that a Games takes place in this cycle, and we are hopeful that a positive outcome can be delivered through the CGF’s discussions with other nations.

“We also wanted to ensure that we had left no stone unturned in the search for solutions, should a viable alternative fail to materialise, but recognised the need for a model that did not rely on large public investment.

“Glasgow has a fantastic track record of delivering large sporting events within sensible budgets, with world-class facilities and expertise already in place as a legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games a decade ago.

“We believe our concept provides the CGF with a viable, cost-effective and exciting solution which importantly won’t involve significant sums of public funding.

“We look forward to discussing the concept further with the CGF, our member sports, athletes and wider partners.”

A spokesperson said: “At this stage there is no Glasgow bid.

“This is a Commonwealth Games Scotland proposal and the city, as an experienced events host, is providing support and technical advice as they assess what might be possible within the budget available from the Commonwealth Games Federation.”
