A woman has said her two children have been left heartbroken after an XL Bully killed their pet dog and broke their gran’s arm following an attack in South Lanarkshire.

Emma Hoey said her mother was babysitting her six-year-old son and had let pet dog Buddy out for the toilet in their garden.

The 27-year-old told STV News that an XL Bully – owned by a neighbour – allegedly jumped over a fence and latched onto the pomeranian’s neck.

Eight-year-old Buddy was taken to the vets, but he died during emergency surgery.

Emma’s mother was then taken to hospital for treatment to deep puncture wounds and a broken arm.

“My mum took Buddy out for the toilet on his lead within my own garden and an XL Bully dog leaped the fence and got my dog by the neck and swung him about and dragged him,” Emma told STV News.

“He then went on to attack my mum’s arm which is now broken and she had to get an operation for – it’s a bad break and she’s in a cast.”

“It’s been unbelievably hard and just feels like one big nightmare, especially for my kids. My daughter got Buddy as a puppy for Christmas when she was two and they grew up together, I can’t put into words how upset she was and my son too as Buddy was his comfort – he has autism and Buddy was his best friend.

“Me and my mum are just as heartbroken, everywhere I look reminds me of him and can’t wrap my head around the fact we won’t see him again, he didn’t deserve to die that way.”

Emma added that if her ten-year-old daughter hadn’t been at a sleepover that day, that she would have taken Buddy out – something she “dreads” to think about.

Since August 1 last year, it has been a criminal offence in Scotland to own an XL Bully without a certificate or to have applied for one by that date.

Those convicted of not complying with the new rules face a maximum of six months imprisonment and a £5,000 fine.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
