Proceedings against the former leader of Inverclyde Council accused of domestic assault have been dropped by the Crown Office.
Stephen McCabe pled not guilty after being charged with domestic assault and threatening or abusive behaviour when he appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court in November.
The 60-year-old was suspended from the Labour Party amid an investigation and quit as the council’s leader.
A trial date at Greenock Sheriff Court was initially set for Monday, February 10.
However, a spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said: “After careful consideration of all of the relevant facts and circumstances, the Procurator Fiscal decided that the case should not proceed at this time.
“The Crown reserves the right to proceed in the future.”
McCabe was replaced as leader by former provost Robert Moran in December.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously.
“They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.”
