A young mother caught trying to smuggle £200,000 of cannabis into Scotland has been jailed for two years.
Angel Cabral was stopped at Glasgow Airport last August 14, having arrived on a flight from Winnipeg, Canada.
The 24-year-old’s suitcase was checked by Border Force officials, and an X-ray revealed it contained a large haul of a green herbal substance.
Cabral said: “This is my bag, but I did not pack it.”
She claimed not to have a key to get into the case, meaning the padlock had to be cut off.
Prosecutor David Fisken told the High Court in Glasgow: “Officers noted that her passport had been applied for on an emergency basis days before travel.”
The case was found to hold a total of 45 vacuum-sealed packages of cannabis.
There was also a tracker device inside one of them.
Mr Fisken said there was more than 20kg of the drug with a potential value of £202,400.
Cabral, of Manitoba, Canada, admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis and an offence under the Customs Act.
Judge Lord Cubie told her: “You have pleaded guilty to a serious offence.
“You knowingly tried to bring something illegal to the UK which turned out to be drugs for your personal gain.
“The cannabis had a potential value of £200,000 which is a lot of divided deals when broken down.
“This has a lot of potential damage for individuals and others in society.
“Your background report rightly considers that you made a poor decision and you had no consideration for the consequences.
“Society’s disapproval and punishment outweigh other sentencing objectives and a custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal.”
Bob Mitchell, defending, earlier told the court that his client “bitterly regrets” her involvement in the offence.
The lawyer added that Cabral stopped her sister from committing a similar offence.
