CalMac has been forced to remove a ferry from one of its busiest routes due to it being damaged by heavy vehicles.

The MV Loch Shira was removed from service on April 5 due to damage to both of its ramps.

The vessel, which usually operates on the Largs to Cumbrae route, is now set to enter dry docks for repairs.

The MV Loch Riddon has been operating a single vessel service in recent days leaving customers facing an increase in waiting times.

CalMac has redeployed the oldest ferry in its fleet – MV Isle of Cumbrae – as the supporting second vessel on the route until another vessel was able to take over.

A timeline for the repairs has yet to be confirmed.

A spokesperson for CalMac said: “MV Loch Shira was removed from service on Friday April 5 due to damage to both ramps and will enter dry dock for repairs as soon as possible.

“MV Loch Riddon has been operating a single vessel service between Largs and Cumbrae, and we apologise for the extended waiting times experienced by customers.

“MV Isle of Cumbrae is now supporting as the second vessel on this route until MV Loch Bhrusda takes over this Friday. A timeline for repairs for MV Loch Shira will be confirmed in due course.”
