There are calls for a GP to be suspended for comments he posted online about a woman who was raped by his son.

Dr Andrew McFarlane was charged with communications offences in August over comments made on social media.

Daniel McFarlane was convicted of raping Ellie Wilson in 2022 and sentenced to five years in jail.

His 61-year-old father reportedly called Wilson a liar and a manipulator, and accused her of blackmail in a series of posts on X.

The General Medical Council (GMC) launched an investigation of their own after they were notified of comments made by McFarlane.

Rape Crisis Scotland has now written to the GMC expressing concern about the “lack of seriousness” on the matter.

The GMC says a full investigation is under way alongside criminal proceedings against Dr McFarlane.

The GP has yet to appear in court over the charge.

A spokesperson from the GMC, said: “As soon as we became aware of the concerns, we took immediate action — launching an investigation and referring Dr McFarlane to an interim orders tribunal.

“A full investigation is now under way alongside ongoing criminal proceedings.

“Dr McFarlane is currently subject to interim conditions on his practice.”

The 61-year-old’s son was found guilty of raping Ms Wilson while they were both students at Glasgow University between 2017 and 2018.

He received two convictions for rape and one for attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

The rape survivor, who waived her anonymity, has gone on to campaign for justice reform and for survivors of male sexual violence.
