A bungling intruder forced his way into the wrong house in South Lanarkshire twice before scarpering.
Police are probing a series of incidents, which saw a man target two Larkhall properties in error last weekend.
It started around 9.45pm on Saturday, when an object was deliberately thrown through the window of a house in Drygate Street.
Shortly after midnight, the man went to the same house and forced his way in before realising he had entered the wrong property then left.
The elderly couple who live there were not injured but have been left extremely shaken.
The suspect then forced entry to a neighbouring house, where an elderly woman lives, but once again had made a mistake. He then made off.
The woman was not hurt but the incident caused alarm.
A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incidents but has since been released, pending further enquiries.
Detective inspector Paul Carruthers said: “These addresses have been targeted in error and although no-one was injured, all the parties involved have been left very distressed by what has happened.”
Anyone with information about the incidents should contact police on 101.
