Plans to demolish a building dating back to the 1830s to create student accommodation have been backed by council planners.

Developers are looking to create the multi-storey building on Glasgow’s Queen Street where the former popular nightclub Archaos once stood.

Officials have recommended that permission be granted for the 14-storey, 195-bed development which would involve the partial demolition of buildings.

The current façade of the 1830s building will be retained and a commercial unit, intended for reoccupation by Tam Shepherd’s Trick Shop, will be created on the ground floor.

A new courtyard will be built to the rear of Queen Street for residents.

The current building has previously been used as a flexible shop, warehouse, office and workshop accommodation.

The upper floors have been vacant since 2010 and the building has fallen into a state of “disrepair”.

Glasgow City Council planners will have the final say on the development.
