A man who helped launch a brutal assault which left his victim without an immune system has been jailed for 18 months.
David Casey, 32, struck the man on the head from behind in Glasgow city centre’s Hope Street on October 5 2023.
Casey was enraged amid an argument about who was going to be served in a chip shop.
Another man, Thomas Tonner, 44, launched repeated blows upon the victim after Casey had fallen to the ground.
The stricken victim later had his spleen taken out, which resulted in him losing his immune system.
Casey’s part in the victim’s string of injuries was a loss of vision in one eye as a result of his strike.
First offender Casey pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault to the victim’s severe injury, permanent impairment and permanent disfigurement.
Tonner previously admitted his guilt at the High Court in Glasgow to an assault to severe injury, permanent impairment and disfigurement as well as to the danger of his life.
Tonner will be sentenced next month.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Casey, of Leicestershire, had been out with workmates drinking that night.
Casey and others went to Pizza Crolla, where they encountered the victim.
A conversation took place between someone with Casey and the victim, the contents of which are unknown.
CCTV footage played in court showed the victim leaving the chip shop ahead of Casey.
Prosecutor Josh Dowie said: “Casey used his right hand to punch him to the right side of the head.”
The footage then showed Tonner repeatedly punch and kick the victim as he lay on the ground.
A witness later came across the victim whose right eye had started to swell.
He was taken to hospital where his blood pressure was noted to have dipped and he required oxygen.
The victim also complained about having a sore stomach at the time.
Mr Dowie said: “[The victim] suffered a removal of his spleen which was caused by blunt trauma.”
The victim stated that he lost 12 kilograms in weight since the incident.
Mr Dowie added: “He no longer has an immune system due to his spleen being removed and requires medication for the rest of his life.
“He has also lost some vision in his eye due to being punched.”
Casey was caught as police traced his bank card used at a nightclub as well as his details from the Airbnb he was staying at.
John Kilcoyne, defending Casey, said: “He drank to excess. There was an argument about who was getting served in the takeaway shop.
“He foolishly punched the victim and consequences have developed.”
