A British Airways plane from Glasgow to London had to issue an alert and be diverted to Manchester due to “fumes in the flight deck”.

The A320 Airbus was on a positioning flight with no customers on board when it issued a 7700 squawk – used to communicate all emergencies onboard a flight.

The alert was issued shortly before 12pm on Friday.

The aircraft took off from Glasgow at around 11.28am and was due to land at London Heathrow.

After crew onboard the plane issued the squawk, pilots requested to land at Manchester Airport “as a precaution”, British Airways (BA) said.

According to Airport Webcams, the BA plane had to be diverted “due to fumes on board”.

After entering into a holding pattern, the flight was able to land shortly after midday.

It is now scheduled to continue its flight to London on Friday afternoon.

A BA spokesperson said: “Our pilots requested a priority landing in Manchester as a precaution due to a minor technical issue, and the aircraft landed normally.”
