The body of a US Navy diver who fell from a ferry travelling from Gourock to Dunoon has been found four months after his disappearance.

Mark Federspiel went overboard on Father’s Day on his way back home from visiting his 22-year-old daughter Lara on the mainland.

The 64-year-old had been receiving treatment for a rare form of leukaemia, with the side effects of the drugs often leaving him unsteady on his feet.

His wife Annette told STV in June that her husband had gone to the bathroom on their way back across the Firth of Clyde on the Sound of Shuna ferry when he failed to return.

An extensive search was carried out, including a rescue helicopter and a boat, but no sign of the dad was found.

Police confirmed that a body was found at Kilcreggan Beach around 4pm on October 12 which has been confirmed as Mr Federspiel. His family have been made aware.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.
