A body has been found during the search for a woman who went missing from a psychiatric hospital in Irvine.

Anne MacDonald was reported missing when she failed to return to her ward at Woodland View hospital after being given “unescorted time within the facility” on Monday, June 3.

Police have now confirmed that the body of a woman was found in woodland near to the Eglington Interchange around 11am on Saturday, June 8.

Formal identification has yet to take place however the family of the 54-year-old have been informed.

There is not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.

Caroline Cameron, director of North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership added: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this sad time.

“We are assisting Police Scotland with their investigations, and it would therefore not be appropriate for us to comment further while these investigations are ongoing.”
