Bid to knock down Glasgow Lidl and replace with new store

A Lidl supermarket in Glasgow could be demolished and replaced with a new store.

Glasgow City Council has received an application from the supermarket chain to demolish its Tollcross Road premises.

It wants to erect a new, larger Lidl foodstore on the same site, the plans reveal.

The move comes after the company’s Springburn Road supermarket was demolished earlier this year to make way for a bigger shop.

Plans show the sales area of the supermarket would increase from 998 square metres to over 1,500 square metres. The number of car parking spaces would also rise from 112 to 125.

Earlier this year, the German retailer announced its plan for expansion in the British market. It is seeking sites for new stores across Great Britain, including 66 in Scotland.

Among the target locations were nine areas in Glasgow. Store relocation is proposed in Baillieston, Springburn, Govan and Crookston.

It is hoped new stores can be developed in Cathcart, Drumchapel, Ibrox, Merchant City and Summerston.

The announcement said Lidl is actively seeking sites in “prominent locations with strong footfall and easy accessibility”.
