The founder of Barrhead Travel Bill Munro has died at the age of 80.
A statement issued by the company said the entrepreneur died at his Lanarkshire home on Saturday, following a period of illness.
They described him as an “influential figure” within the Scottish business community.
A spokesperson said: “It’s been almost 50 years since Bill Munro founded Barrhead Travel. His bold vision fundamentally changed the landscape for high street travel agents across the country.
“He made a tremendous contribution to the overall travel industry as well as becoming an influential figure within the Scottish business community.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife, daughters, and wider family and friends.”
Barrhead Travel was founded by Mr Munro in East Renfrewshire in 1975, and has since went on to have stores in dozens of locations throughout the United Kingdom.
He stepped down from the helm of the company in 2007, with his daughter Sharon succeeding, but he remained a presence with the agency.
The business was sold to US-based Travel Leaders Group in 2018, and was by that time one of the UK’s biggest travel agents.
Mr Munro was hailed by as having delivered “transformational impact” to the travel sector.
