Ayr, Prestwick and Troon could be set for 20mph speed limits

Ayr, Troon and Prestwick are set to be considered for 20mph speed limits as the rollout of lower limits continues across South Ayrshire.

The three towns have been identified for a future phase of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) programme, which has already introduced 20mph limits in a number of communities.

Before attention turns to South Ayrshire’s larger towns, work is continuing to introduce the limits in Coylton, Maybole, Barr and Pinmore.

An update going before the Ayrshire Shared Services Joint Committee confirms that phases one to three of the programme in South Ayrshire villages have been completed.

The fourth phase is now progressing, with Girvan complete and work continuing in the other four communities.

Draft Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders are ready to progress following the completion of associated consultation, while changes will also be required to signs and road markings.

ARA expects the latest limits to be implemented in early 2027.

The report then identifies Ayr, Troon and Prestwick as the communities which could follow.

It states: “Phase 5 in future years will then consider the towns of Troon, Prestwick and Ayr.”

However, no timetable is provided for that phase and the report does not specify which roads within the three towns would be considered for a 20mph limit.

ARA is also progressing lower speed limits in East Ayrshire.

Trials were introduced in New Cumnock, Mauchline, Kilmaurs and Crookedholm during February and March this year following approval by East Ayrshire Council.

The trial programme will be extended to Ochiltree in October or November 2026.

The update forms part of ARA’s Improvement Action Plan, which is used to monitor progress against the shared roads service’s objectives and identify potential risks or problem areas.
