'Avoid the area' residents evacuated after fire breaks out at block of flats in Cambuslang

Emergency services are asking members of the public to avoid the area after residents were evacuated following a fire which broke out at a block of flats in South Lanarkshire.

Police Scotland responded to the scene with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at a block in Claude Avenue in Cambuslang after 8.15am on Sunday.

Seven trucks and two specialist resources tackled the blaze within the third floor of the high-rise building.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said there have been no reported casualties.

Two people were checked over by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.

Street access is said to be limited and members of the public urged to stay away.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.07am on Sunday, August 18 to reports of a fire within a high-rise building on Claude Avenue in Cambuslang.

“Operations Control mobilised seven appliances and two specialist resources, and firefighters were met by a fire within the building’s third floor.

“The fire has been extinguished and crews remain at the scene to make the area safe.

“There have been no reports of casualties.”

A Police Scotland statement read: “Around 8.15am on Sunday, August 18, 2024, we were called to a report of a fire at a block of flats in Claude Avenue in Cambuslang.

“Emergency services attended and a number of residents had to be evacuated as a precaution.

“Two people were checked over by paramedics at the scene however did not require hospital treatment.

“Emergency services remain at the scene and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
