Australian man jumps into River Kelvin to get his football back

Dan Hespe dropped his football into the river in Glasgow's Kelvinbridge and was determined to get it back.

This is the moment an Australian man jumped into the River Kelvin to get his football back, prompting cheers from crowds.

Dan Hespe had been enjoying some sunshine at a beer garden in the West End with the rest of the Glasgow Sharks Australian Rules Football Club when he lost his ball over a fence.

Determined to get it back, Dan jumped into the river at Kelvinbridge and swam to retrieve the football.

When asked about the swim, he told STV News: “We’ve been participating in our Silly Sunday for the day, which is a tradition in Australia, where, as the name [suggests], you get silly.

“And unfortunately, my football ended up in the Kelvin, and I thought that it didn’t look too deep, maybe up to the knees. Turned out – up to your chin.

“Anyway, I got the ball, everyone’s cheering, these things happen.”

Dan and the rest of his friends then returned to enjoying their evening at the pub.
