Police are probing an attack on a young mother who died weeks later while on holiday in Tenerife.

Megan Brannan from Motherwell in North Lanarkshire died while on holiday with family on October 14.

Tributes have been posted on Facebook to the 24-year-old whose daughter celebrated her first birthday last month.

The Scottish Sun has reported investigators are considering whether Ms Brannan's death could be linked to an attack on September 5 in her hometown.

A spokesman for the police force said: "Police Scotland is investigating a report of an assault on a 24-year-old woman which took place on September 5, 2019, at Chesters Crescent, Motherwell.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Tenerife and our staff are in contact with the Spanish authorities."

On Christmas Day, Ms Brannan's sister Toni Brannan took to social media to share a picture with her one-year-old niece at her late sister's graveside.

She wrote: "Hardest day ever you not being here to watch your princess open her presents.

"To think this is just the first Christmas without you with many more to come breaks my heart into a million pieces."
