Two people have been arrested following a break-in to a fire-damaged convenience store in North Lanarkshire.

Flames tore through the Spar in Motherwell’s Merry Street on Sunday night.

Emergency services were alerted at around 6.30pm and worked through the night and into the next day to extinguish the flames.

There were no reports of any injuries, however the blaze caused disruption to the area’s water supply.

As well as incidents of no water, Scottish Water warned local residents to expect low pressure, intermittent supplies and discolouration.

On Thursday, Police Scotland reported that two people had been arrested in connection with a break-in and theft of stock from the shop.

All stock has since been removed.

A force spokesperson said: “Two persons were arrested after a break-in and theft of stock from a fire-damaged shop in Merry Street, Motherwell.

“All stock has now been removed and officers are conducting patrols of the area to combat similar crime.”
