American food chain Wendy’s is set to open its first Scottish location in Glasgow city centre.

Glasgow City Council has received an application from the fast food chain to open its first Scottish branch at 139 Sauchiehall Street.

Nine planning application documents have been submitted, including plans to add Wendy’s signage to the entrance doors of the B-listed building and to mount a 70-inch Samsung display screen behind the existing window.

The company is the third largest burger chain in the world after McDonald’s and Burger King, with around 6,700 outlets in 30 countries, however it left the UK in 1999.

Wendy’s announced its return to the UK in May 2021, with stores opening in Reading, Stratford and Oxford.

Bosses said they hope to open around 400 restaurants across the country.

The chain’s first ever restaurant in Scotland will extend to two floors over basement and ground level.

Designs show plans for dining areas, order kiosks, drinks stations and service points, as well as staff and storage rooms.

Proposals say the project would “honour the building’s historical identity while providing a modern dining experience”.

A decision is expected to be made on the plans by Friday, January 17.
