Two rabbits were found “running loose” near a busy road after being abandoned in South Lanarkshire.

The Scottish SPCA said that a truck driver spotted the pair, a black and a white giant continental rabbits, loose at the side of the A73.

A carrier was on the other side of the fence but had been left open which allowed the rabbits to escape.

The driver managed to secure the rabbits with the help of another driver and alerted the SSPCA on Thursday.

Scottish SPCA inspector Jennifer Surgeon said that the rabbits showed no “obvious” signs of injury and were in good condition.

The rabbits are now safe and staying at one of the SSPCA animal rescue and rehoming centres.

Ms Surgeon added: “This is not the correct way to give up a pet if you can no longer care for them. This was a dangerous situation for these rabbits and the outcome could have been very different.

“If anyone recognises these rabbits or has any information surrounding their circumstances, they should call our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
