A dog that captured the nation’s heart after being abandoned at a train station with a suitcase full of his belongings has passed away.

Kai was discovered tied to a railing outside Ayr station on January 2, 2005, alongside his pillow, toy, food bowl and food.

The male Shar-Pei crossbreed was taken into the care of the Scottish SCPA, who shared his story online, prompting offers of help from around the world.

The charity received hundreds of adoption applications from places as far away as New York, Los Angeles, France, Spain and even the Philippines.

The charity chose Ian Russell as his new owner.

From there, the pair enjoyed 11 years of adventure and friendship.

“Kai became Ian’s constant companion”, the SSCPA said.

“From 7am starts to long days on the road, he was always there jumping into the van, travelling across Scotland from Loch Lomond to Troon, meeting strangers who quickly became friends. Everywhere he went, he gathered biscuits, affection and admiration.

“The mountains were where Kai seemed most alive. Together, they climbed over 100 Munros, including Ben Nevis five or six times.

“At the summit, Kai would pause, standing still and taking it all in.

At home, he was a comforting presence, sleeping at the bottom of the bed, sitting quietly by Ian’s side, and being part of every daily routine.

“In the harder moments, he gave even more. If Ian was having a tough day, Kai would simply move closer, gently nudging in – a quiet reminder that he wasn’t alone.

“Toward the end, as Kai’s body began to fail him, Ian carried him into the van and sat beside him on their journeys, just as Kai had always done for him. The roles changed, but the bond never did.”

Announcing Kai’s passing, the charity said he had spent over a decade as a loyal companion, travelling, mountain climber, source of comfort and friend to everyone he met.
