The A8 road near Coatbridge was closed after reports that a wartime bomb had been discovered.

Police were called to the road at Shawhead at around 2.45pm on Monday.

The on and off ramps from the A725 onto the A8 were shut while a bomb squad attended.

The explosives experts examined the item which was then identified as a gas canister.

Police said it posed no threat to the public.

The road was then reopened.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.45 pm on Monday, January 24, police were called following the discovery of what was thought to be an unexploded wartime device near to the A8, Shawhead, Coatbridge.

“The EOD (Explosives Ordnance Disposal) attended and following examination it was confirmed that the item, identified as a gas canister, posed no threat to the public.

“The on and off ramp from the A725 to the A8, which was closed as a precaution at the time, is now open.”
