A major road in South Ayrshire remains closed in both directions due to damage caused by a burst water mains.

The A77 at Kirkoswald was shut at around 3.35am on Thursday, after a water mains burst.

Scottish Water confirmed it had completed the repair, but the road remains closed while an assessment of the damage to the road surface takes place.

It confirmed that nearby businesses, Souter’s Inn and Kirklands House & Garden garden centre, remain open.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We have completed the repair on a burst water main on the A77 at Kirkoswald but unfortunately the road remains closed while we asses the extent of the damage caused to the carriageway.

“We would ask road users to follow the diversion that has been set up and also remind people that local businesses are still open.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience the closure may be causing.”
