A major road in North Ayrshire has been closed for several hours in both directions due to an ongoing gas leak.

Emergency services closed the A737, between the Hillend Roundabout and Old Monk Castle in Kilwinning, at around 7am on Thursday.

Traffic is being diverted along the B714 and drivers are urged to find alternative routes at this time.

The latest update from Traffic Scotland confirmed that the road remained closed as of 4.16pm.

SGN has confirmed that it currently has engineers at the scene working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “Our engineers are attending a high volume gas escape in the A737 and will shortly begin repairs to our gas network.

“Due to the location of our gas main and to ensure everyone’s safety, the A737 has been closed between Hillend roundabout and Old Monk Castle.

“A diversion route is in place for motorists travelling in both directions via the B714.

“We understand this is a busy route and we apologise for the inconvenience.

We’ll be working as hard as possible to complete our repairs and fully re-open the road.

“At the moment it’s too early to say when this will be, but we’ll keep you updated”.

A spokesperson for Traffic Scotland said: “The A737 is currently closed between the Hillend Roundabout and Old Monk Castle in Kilwinning.

“This is due to a gas leak which is currently being investigated.

“Traffic is being diverted along the B714.”
