Proposals to reduce speed limits on West Dunbartonshire’s roads to 20mph have been approved by local councillors.

During yesterday’s IRED (infrastructure, regeneration and economic development) committee members were asked to approve new traffic regulation orders (TROs) to support the reduction of speed limits as part of the council’s 20mph strategy.

The strategy was previously presented and approved by committee last may and introduced mandatory 20mph speed limits on residential streets within the authority.

As a result, 26 individual 20mph zones were created across the local authority based on priority and physical boundaries such as major roads, railways, natural barriers, and changes in area character.

Scottish Government funding was received back in August 2025 to support the roll out of mandatory 20mph limits as part of their national commitment to extend speed limits to appropriate roads in built-up areas by the end of 2025 while improving road safety.

The roads and transportation service then carried out pre-implementation speed surveys on 10% of the streets included and purchased new required road signs.

During the meeting, councillor Sophie Traynor said: “Other neighbouring authorities have implemented similar measures such as East Dunbartonshire.

“Have we been chatting with our colleagues there to see about ‘lessons learned’ and can I just get some clarification about the enforcement.

“I know part of that will be with the police but I am just wondering about the partnership working that we are doing in this.”

Liam Greene, Roads and Transport Manager, said: “Yes it is part of our process to speak to local authorities who are further down the process than us so we did engage with them and tried to learn from their experiences in terms of how they implemented it.

“We engage with Police Scotland and they are generally supportive. They will generally only enforce where there are measures to support a reduction in speed such as speed bumps.

“There has been engagement both at a local level and a national level.”
