Residents were evacuated from their homes as firefighters battle a blaze at a car wash garage in Irvine.

Emergency services attended the premises on Ayr Road, near the Rivergate shopping centre, at around 1pm on Tuesday.

Residents in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution due to acetylene chemicals being in the building.

Shortly before 5pm on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the fire service confirmed that the fire had been extinguished.

She said: "Crews worked with Police Scotland to evacuate the immediate area after being made aware of the presence of acetylene within the premises.

"The acetylene was quickly located. It was not involved in the fire and was not showing any signs of heat.

"Fire crew dressed in breathing apparatus doused the flames using water jets as Scottish Power isolated supplies.

"SFRS have now handed the premises over to Building Control officers."
