A post-mortem is to be carried out on the body of a female discovered in woods by the roadside in Clydebank.

The unidentified remains was discovered at around 12.45pm on Monday in West Dunbartonshire.

Officers cordoned off a large swathe of land and a forensic team scoured the area on Monday.

Officers remained at the scene, just off Great Western Road, on Tuesday morning.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday that "inquiries are ongoing".

In an update on Monday night, a Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Around 12.45pm on Monday police were called to a report of a body having been found just of Great Western Road in Clydebank.

"Officers remain at the scene and inquiries are at a very early stage.

"Formal identification is yet to take place. The death is currently being treated as unexplained."

The post-mortem will take place on Tuesday.
