Four attackers left a man with a serious head injury after assaulting him in Glasgow's Possilpark area, police said.

The 36-year-old victim had left a pub on Saracen Street at 9.20pm on Friday when he became involved in an "altercation" with the four young men.

After the attack, he was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment.

A police spokesman said the attackers were part of a larger group who were on Saracen Street at the time.

The suspects are described as white, and of average height and build. At the time of the attack they were wearing tracksuits.

Detective constable Alan McIntosh from Maryhill CID is leading the enquiry.

He said: "A man has been left with a very serious head injury as a result of this attack and enquiries are at an early stage to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"I would like to speak to anyone with information about this incident. Saracen Street was busy at this time and I am confident that people in the community will have seen or heard a disturbance."

Anyone with information is urged to contact officers at Maryhill CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.
