An elderly woman fought off a robber who tried to grab her handbag as she walked home from church.

The 69-year-old victim was walking home on Monday night in Shettleston, in the east end of Glasgow, when she was attacked by a hooded man.

He tried to make off with her handbag during the robbery bid at around 8pm on Despard Avenue near to Ballieston Road.

However, the elderly woman resisted and fought him off before he ran west along Ballieston Road towards Shettleston Road.

The man is described as around 5ft 6in to 5ft 7in, slim with sallow skin. He was wearing a dark hooded jumper with the hood up, dark jeans and a long dark jacket.

Detective constable Paul Corr said: "This was a very frightening attack on an elderly woman who had been making her way home from church at the time.

"Luckily she was not seriously injured but she has been left badly shaken by the experience.

"The surrounding area would have been reasonably busy around the time of the incident and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to get in touch.

"Anyone with information is urged to contact officers on 101."
