Snow is forecast to fall across Scotland with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for much of the country.

Wintry showers are expected to fall on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, prompting yellow weather warnings for ice and snow across much of the central belt and north of Scotland.

The Met Office issued the warnings for Strathclyde, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, the Highlands and Islands, Dumfries and Galloway and Lothian and Borders.

The snow is expected as a cold front moves east and south across the north of the United Kingdom through Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

It will introduce significantly colder air, with frequent showers turning to sleet and snow even at low levels.

Around 2cm to 5cm is expected in many areas by dawn on Wednesday with up to 10cm in places.

Clear spells between showers will also lead to icy stretches forming on untreated surfaces.

A statement from the Met Office said: "Showers will turn wintry this evening across the warning area, with the risk of a more prolonged spell of snowfall late in the night and early Wednesday morning, especially in the south.

"This will give a covering of snow with 2cm to 5cm possible in many places and locally 5cm to 10 cm, these higher accumulations mainly above 100m.

"Icy stretches on untreated roads and pavements are also likely to form. Please be aware of some difficult driving conditions and the potential for travel disruption into the Wednesday morning rush hour."
