Police are investigating if drugs were involved in a 13-year-old girl falling ill while out with friends.

The teenager was taken to hospital by her family after friends alerted them when she became unwell in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, at the weekend.

An investigation has now been launched after the incident was reported to police at 6.30pm on Saturday.

The girl was taken to Monklands General Hospital for checks but did not need treatment.

Inspector Louise Brownlie, of Coatbridge police office, said: "A possible line of inquiry is that the girl consumed a drug of some kind, however, this is still to be established.

"The girl was taken to the hospital only as a precaution, however, this was a terribly frightening incident for her relatives. We are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."
