Police are investigating online abuse aimed at the four children of Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths.

Griffiths was targeted on Twitter after Celtic's Scottish Cup victory against East Kilbride on Sunday.

One account, under the name FaZe Jmbno, sent tweets to the Scotland forward wishing death on his four children.

The online post read: "I hope your 4 kids die." Griffiths then responded to the tweet and the account replied saying: "Am no winding ye up Leigh, I genuinely hope your kids drop dead."

It prompted Griffiths to issue a statement online urging people to leave his children alone. Police Scotland has also confirmed it is investigating the matter.

Griffiths wrote: "I’m all for banter on Twitter, I get praise when it’s due, and criticism when it’s due, but why do people feel the need to wish bad things happen to my kids??

"I’m doing my job at the end of the day, and if people don’t like that, fine.

"But please don’t wish things like my kids to die please, because it really does hurt. They don’t have anything to do with my job. I go to work, come home and be a family man.

"I love my 4 kids with everything I have, and what I do, I do for them."

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We can confirm that a complaint has been received and police enquiries are at an early stage into this matter."
