A man with a shopping trolley launched an attack on a victim in a busy city centre street before fleeing in a taxi.

The 26-year-old victim was walking along Union Street in Glasgow when he was attacked by another man at around 11.25pm on Wednesday.

The suspect then headed off further down Union Street towards Argyle Street where it is understood he may have entered a taxi.

Police say he may have been in the company of another two men but they were not involved in the attack, which left him needing hospital treatment.

He was taken by ambulance to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he will receive treatment for serious injuries. Medical staff describe his condition as stable.

The suspect is described as a white man aged 20-25, with a medium height and build. He was wearing dark clothing with white trainers and a tammy hat.

He was in possession of a three wheeled shopping trolley or support frame, which was not used in the attack.

Detective constable Stacy Smith, of Greater Glasgow CID, said: "This was a brazen attack in Glasgow city centre which has left a man requiring hospital treatment for serious injuries.

"We are not aware of the suspect's motivation to attack the man at this time. Our enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack. At this time officers continue to analyse available CCTV and have been speaking with local businesses.

"I am appealing to anyone people who may have been walking or driving in the area and who could have seen the suspect, to contact police with any information that could help the inquiry by phoning 101."
