A teenager who set off a smoke bomb during a Scottish Premiership match has been detained for five months and banned from attending games for two years.

Calum Smith, 18, pled guilty to using the device in the North Stand of New Douglas Park during a match between Hamilton and Motherwell on September 19, 2015.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard police had seen Smith setting off the orange and white smoke bomb in the North Stand. He was arrested as he attempted to leave at the end of the game.

Speaking after Smith was sentenced, Stephen Ferguson, football liaison prosecutor for the west of Scotland, said: "Setting off smoke bombs or any pyrotechnics at a football match is stupid and dangerous.

"Such irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated and police and prosecutors are determined to identify offenders and bring them to justice."

Smith was given a further two months detention for breaching bail conditions and attending another match between the two sides in January.

The banning order means that he will be banned from all regulated football matches throughout the whole of the United Kingdom for a period of two years.
