An extra £4m of Scottish Government cash has been set aside for road improvements at a notorious landslide spot.

Transport minister Derek Mackay announced £6.6m is to be invested in improvements on the A83, including just over £4m for work at the Rest and Be Thankful.

When the route has to close due to landslides, motorists are forced to take a very lengthy diversiuon.

The total being spent on tackling the problem there is £13.5m. The work will include widening the old military road, which is used as a diversion when the A83 is closed, making this more resilient.

In addition, netting, which has helped prevent some 2300 tonnes of debris reaching the road, will also be improved.

Mr Mackay announced the additional cash at a meeting of the A83 Task Force in the Argyll village of Arrochar.

He said: "The most recent landslides have shown that the mitigation measures introduced, including netting, catchpits and culverts, are doing their job with thousands of tonnes of debris being caught on various occasions.

"The elements have thrown some horrendous conditions our way, especially at the end of last year with the wettest December on record.

"We are already learning lessons from the events that occurred as a result of the exceptional rainfall and the additional investment being outlined today will help strengthen our response further.

"We are listening to the concerns of the local community and taking action to further enhance the old military road.

"We will continue to work with all interested parties as we move forward with the on-going improvements on the A83."
