A man who went missing on New Year's Day has been found dead, police have said.

Graham Johnstone, 70, left his home in Whitehill Crescent, Annbank around 10.30am on Friday January 1.

His family, who reported him missing later that day, said he enjoyed walking along local routes.

A rescue helicopter, a police dog unit and volunteers searched walkways around Annbank and Auchincruive Estate.

A police statement on Sunday morning confirmed he had been found dead.

Police Scotland said: "Mr Johnstone’s body was recovered from the River Ayr, near Tarholm Bridge, Annbank, yesterday afternoon, Saturday 23 January 2016.

"His relatives are aware. There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"Members of the media and the public are thanked for their assistance during this investigation."
