Hundred of jobs at Virgin Media in Scotland could be at risk after the company confirmed it could make up to 900 redundancies throughout the UK.

The company is thought to employ more than 1000 people north of the border, with 750 staff working at its Bellshill call centre in North Lanarkshire.

The company said it was entering a consultation period with affected employees over proposed organisational changes to be rolled out over the next two years.

It said that the "reorganisation" is to enable growth plans and that overall, Virgin Media intends to increase the number of people it employs from around 23,000 in 2015 to 26,000 in 2017.

Tom Mockridge, CEO of Virgin Media, said: "Over the last three years Virgin Media has been transformed.

"We’re expanding, investing and growing our business. The proposed reorganisation will give us an even sharper focus on the customer, network expansion and business growth."
