A man has died after his car careered off a motorway in South Lanarkshire.

The 47-year-old was driving a Ford Mondeo north on the M74 at 11.15am on Wednesday when he apparently lost control, police said.

His car left the road and collided with a tree near junction eight at Larkhall.

The driver died at the scene. A report will be sent to procurator fiscal.

Inspector Darren Faulds, of the Trunk Road Policing Group in Motherwell, is appealing for witnesses to the incident. Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call him on 101.
