A teenager is in hospital after allegedly being attacked by two boys at a school in North Lanarkshire.

The 16-year-old boy was assaulted at Brannock High School in Newarthill, near Motherwell, around 1pm on Tuesday afternoon.

STV News understands a hammer or baton was allegedly used in the attack.

A family member took the teenager to Wishaw General Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries, which staff say are not life-threatening.

Police arrested two boys, aged 15 and 16, in connection with the attack.

They are being detained in custody, and reports will be sent to the procurator fiscal and children's reporter.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council, which runs the school, said: "An incident took place at lunchtime today, where two teenagers, who are not associated with the school, entered the building and assaulted one of our pupils.

"School staff attended to the pupil and provided him with first aid. We contacted the police and ambulance service who were both quickly on the scene."
