A man who disappeared after failing to meet a friend has been found safe and well by police.

Peter Holland, 46, was reported missing after he was dropped off near a medical centre in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, at around 9am on Thursday.

He had been last seen in the town's Commercial Road, near to the Avondale Medical Centre and had a few appointments that day as well as planning to visit a friend to drop off a tent.

Police launched a major search and appealed to the public for help after he did not contact his friend and failed to return home.

Police confirmed on Friday afternoon that Mr Holland had been traced safe and well
