120,000 passengers have travelled through Glasgow Central Station since the resumption of its normal timetable.

All platforms fully reopened on Wednesday, following a massive blaze which destroyed a historic building in the city centre.

Scotland’s busiest railway station closed as a result of the fire, which started in a vape shop on Union Street more than two weeks ago and spread through the Victorian building.

A small exclusion zone remains in place on the high-level concourse while Glasgow City Council continues its remediation work on the affected building.

The Gordon Street and Union Street entrances also remain closed.

ScotRail recorded around 120,000 passenger journeys at the station on Wednesday, as people used the trains to return to work, education, and for leisure travel.

During the period when only low-level services were operating, between March 11 and 17, weekday journeys averaged around 55,000.

This rose to 94,000 after the partial reopening of nine high-level platforms between March 18 and 24, before returning to near-normal levels with the full resumption of services with all station platforms available.

ScotRail’s chief operating officer David Ross said: “We’re really pleased to see customers coming back to the railway in such strong numbers following the return of our normal timetable at Glasgow Central.

“The speed of recovery shows the essential role rail plays in keeping people moving and supporting the economy of Glasgow and beyond. We’re grateful to our customers for their patience and support while services were disrupted.

“With a full timetable now in operation, we’re focused on continuing to deliver a reliable service and helping customers travel with confidence.”
