Yellow weather warning as thunderstorms and heavy showers to hit Scotland

The Met Office has issued two weather warnings for thunderstorms across large parts of Scotland over the next two days.

The first yellow warning comes into force at midday on Tuesday, August 4 and is expected to last until 10pm, bringing thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Areas within the warning zone include much of the east coast, including Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen, along with central parts, including Stirling, all the way to the north-east outskirts of Glasgow.

The Met Office confirms that some areas could be hit with up to 20mm within just one hour.

The warning reads: “Heavy and thundery showers are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the early evening.

“Whilst not all places in the warning area will see heavy showers, accumulations of 15 to 20 mm are possible in one hour and 30 to 40 mm in 3 hours or so where they do occur. Hail and lightning will be additional hazards.”

In addition, a second yellow weather warning has been issued for most of the Cairngorms, including parts of the Highlands, Moray and Grampian.

This will come into force at 10am on Wednesday, August 5, and last until 9pm.

The Met Office described the weather during this time as “slow-moving showers and thunderstorms”.

Lightning and gusty winds will also be a hazard for most of Wednesday.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also issued seven flood alerts for areas covered in the warning zone.

These areas include: Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and Lothians, Fife, Tayside and west central Scotland.

SEPA is warning that some areas experiencing heavy rain could see flooding, with businesses and residents urged to be vigilant.
