STV NewsStorm Austen: first named storm of the season
Storm Austen is forecast to bring gusts of 50-60mph to southern areas, with 70mph possible along exposed coasts.
STV News meteorologist Sean Batty says that while the worst of the winds from Storm Austen won’t hit Scotland, heavy rain is forecast.
A yellow weather warning is in place for much of the country from 6am on Friday until midnight.
Forecasters are warning of the small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.
Disruption is also expected on rail, road, ferry and air transport services, and some communities could become cut off by flooded roads.
STV NewsAn area of heavy rain will develop across southern and central areas of Scotland before dawn Friday in association with Storm Austen, extending over northeast Scotland during the morning and early afternoon.
The Met Office says accumulations of 20-40 mm are expected widely within the warning area through this period, with 60-80 mm possible in some locations.
Storm Boelo: second named storm
Storm Boelo arrives early on Saturday morning, pushing into western Scotland and persisting throughout the weekend.
The Met Office has warned of injuries and danger from flying debris as Storm Boelo is to batter Scotland with strong winds from Saturday.
A yellow warning comes into force at 6pm and remains until 9pm on Sunday.
STV weather presenter Philip Petrie said: “It looks set to bring heavy bursts of rain, particularly over higher ground, with further heavy showers and rain constantly wrapping around the centre of the storm and moving west to east across the country.
STV News“The winds associated with Storm Boelo are the most concerning part.
“We currently have a yellow weather warning covering the whole of Scotland from 6pm Saturday until 9pm Sunday where widely we could see gusts of 55-60mph and some higher ground areas and coastal parts seeing gusts of 80mph.
“Storm Boelo will move away finally overnight Sunday into Monday when we start to see the winds easing and dying out.”
The Met Office warned the public to be prepared for:
- Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
- Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
- Some roads and bridges may close
- Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
