Hundreds of homes remain without power, and several schools are closed days after Storm Boelo battered Scotland.

The storm, which sparked yellow and amber weather warnings for wind across the country, resulted in power outages and widespread travel disruption.

A 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree in Dumfries and Galloway on Sunday during the storm, which battered Scotland with 80mph gusts.

Richard Baines, curator of Logan Botanic Garden, was injured on a minor road while walking at Mid Kelton near Castle Douglas around 10.30am on Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two women were also injured by another falling tree in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross.

On Wednesday, Canisbay Primary and Nursery in the Highlands were closed due to a lack of power. Kilchattan Primary School in Colonsay, Argyll and Bute, is also closed until further notice.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said over 110,000 customers have been reconnected since the start of the storm, with 500 engineers working on Wednesday to reconnect supplies.

However, 620 customers are currently off supply and are expected to be reconnected today, with a small number potentially without power overnight into Thursday.

SSEN has distributed 19,000 meals to households impacted by the conditions

Nik Wheeler, head of customer operations at SSEN Distribution, said: “We know it’s been a really challenging few days if you’re still without power, and we’re incredibly grateful for your patience and understanding.

“More than 500 engineers are working today to get your power back on, and we’ll keep doing everything we can to reconnect you as quickly and safely as possible.

“We’re really grateful for the many messages of support our teams have received from customers and communities. They mean a great deal to our colleagues working in challenging conditions.

“We’ll keep working until every customer is safely reconnected and continue supporting those who need us most in the meantime.”

Due to damage at Kilcreggan Pier, a number of CalMac services have also been disrupted on Wednesday.

ScotRail advised passengers of a failure of the electrical supply in the Coatdyke area, with trains between Milngavie and Edinburgh via Airdrie and Bathgate subject to delay and cancellation.
