Skating club rolls out virtual disco nights during lockdown

Skaters get together online, show off their moves and keep practicing despite the COVID-19 outbreak.

Like all other groups, RollerStop club had to close its rink suddenly due to the coronavirus outbreak.

But the club decided to open their doors, based at Kinning Park in Glasgow, virtually to roller skate fans.

RollerStop’s Ian Donnelly, said: “Closing the rink was a real disappointment, but necessary for everyone’s well being.”

Not knowing how long the rink would be closed for, the club came up with a plan to run a virtual roller disco.

Every Saturday night, between 6pm to 8pm, they live stream on conferencing service Zoom and ask people to join them.

Last weekend the group held its first virtual disco night.

Mr Donnelly said: “Skaters had made a ‘rink’ at home, disco lights and all. It was amazing fun and nice to see our skating community coming together.”

After the first successful online skating night, RollerStop has promises to continue to stream live from people’s homes until skaters will be able to go back to the rink.
