Empty streets in Glasgow as level-four lockdown begins

The level four rules for came into force for 11 council areas at 6pm on Friday.

The streets of Glasgow were unusually quiet on Saturday after level-four lockdown kicked off in the city.

The usually heaving Buchanan Street and Argyle Street lay almost empty as non-essential shops, pubs and restaurants closed their doors for three weeks.

Close-contact services such as hairdressers and beauty salons have also been forced to shut their doors.

The level four rules for came into force for 11 council areas at 6pm on Friday, when travel curbs in level three and four areas became the law.

Many industry leaders have warned that some businesses may not be able to survive the lockdown, which the First Minister admitted was “difficult”.

Nicola Sturgeon said it’s hoped the restrictions will slow the spread of coronavirus to such an extent that families can gather at Christmas and that hospitals are not overwhelmed.
